The James R. Sylla School, a state certified
special education school located on the Sunny Hills
San Anselmo Campus, meets the individual educational
needs of 13 to 18 year olds from Sunny Hills Services'
Sunny Hills program and from the greater Bay Area community.
Most students have severe learning disabilities in addition
to significant mental health and behavior disorders,
especially conflict and anger management issues. A state-funded
Title I teacher and Sunny Hills Services speech therapist
provide one-on-one strategies for learning disabilities
in a self-contained classroom; two subject area classrooms,
for language arts and science/math, mimic public school
life within a structured and supportive environment.
Sylla School's two staff social workers, trained
in crisis and conflict management, lessen the level
and amount of a client's agitation by guiding him or
her through serious socialization difficulties, and
its established vocational program teaches employable
skills with the goal of giving clients the tools to
find and maintain fulfilling employment in the community.
Sylla School strives to mainstream students into
public schools; alternatively, it offers diplomas to
graduating seniors when they complete all credits required
by their home school district.
