At the main San Anselmo Campus the four cottages of
our Sunny Hills Adolescent Treatment (Level 12)
program serve emotionally, behaviorally, and mentally
disturbed boys and girls ranging in age from 12 to 18.
Many Sunny Hills clients cannot function properly in
a community setting or have shuffled between residential
treatments due to their extreme behavioral disorders.
Housed in cottages of ten, 20 boys and 20 girls undergo
intensive milieu-based treatment. Each milieu team comprises
a group of mental health professionals including a Master's
level social worker, a nurse, a teacher, a dietitian
and a consulting psychiatrist.
Clients attend the special education school on the
campus grounds and participate in an individually designed
Day Treatment program of individual, group, family and
recreation therapy specifically aimed at providing the
tools and life skills for clients to function as normal
children and teens.
The program focuses on helping clients develop the
self-understanding, impulse control and learning tools
necessary for successful participation in their community,
their school, their peer group, and their family. A
level system enhances clients' ability to assess their
own strengths and weaknesses and motivates them towards
assuming more responsibility and autonomy in relating
to the outside community.
The Sunny Hills program strives to reunite clients
with their families or caregivers. If reunification
is not possible before clients reach age 18, they receive
support in finding appropriate housing and employment
to ease transition to life in the community.
